- Five Must-Haves for Impacting Student Outcomes in High-Enrollment, Low Pass Rate Math Courses: Lessons from Baltimore City Community College
Community colleges essential for so many students, offering flexibility, opportunity, and access to higher education. But students consistently struggle with mathematics, which is a requirement for many degrees.
Most colleges offer tutoring centers, online help, and instructor office hours, but students who need support the most often slip through the cracks. The result? Too many students are unable to pass critical gatekeeper math courses.
According to the College Access Network, 37% of students enrolled in gatekeeper math classes do not pass. The implications are serious—lost tuition dollars, declining retention, and students losing faith in their academic journey.
But what if there were a proven way to change these outcomes?
At Baltimore City Community College (BCCC), a popular nursing program was interested in improving pass rates in their introductory math class. Students are required to pass the ATI-TEAS test, and BCCC wanted to increase graduation rates.
That’s when they partnered with Eurekii.
The results?
• 100% of students increased scores
• Significant growth: Averaged over 300% from pre-test to unit test
• Students in the lowest 20%—often the hardest to engage—attended 89%+ of sessions on average
• 80% of students passed on the first time, up from 50-60% in past tests
Not only did students improve, but they expressed strong motivation and engagement, and built confidence in math—many for the first time.
So, what made the difference?
Here are the five must-haves for effective, strategic tutoring:
1. Seamless coordination between tutors, instructors, and departments around curriculum, exam content, credits, and schedules.
2. Student buy-in—consistent schedules, at times they choose, with the same trusted tutor.
3. Holistic tracking of engagement, proficiency, attendance, and satisfaction.
4. Focus on student engagement—addressing anxiety and unfinished learning in a safe, constructive way so students build confidence.
5. Actionable data that demonstrates impact and secures leadership commitment and funding.
This is what we call strategic tutoring—not just extra help, but a coordinated, data-driven approach that changes outcomes at scale.
